Recent studies have suggested that less than one in five Australian children aged between 5 - 17 meet the national recommended daily physical activity guidelines of 60 minutes per day. As well, Australian children have below average aerobic fitness and poor movement skills. Improving fitness and movement capabilities through enhancing areas such as muscular strength and aerobic endurance are frequently presented as viable methods to positively develop teenagers' physical capabilities as well as their cognitive and psychosocial wellbeing. Consequently, HPE lessons during school time are becoming increasingly important as opportunities for children and teens to develop their physical fitness capacities and their fundamental movement abilities.

While many HPE practitioners readily engage in what might be termed S&C activities in their own time, they may also benefit from broadening their knowledge base of activities and ways to implement them which are suitable and practical for use with their students in a school setting. This active workshop will allow attendees to participate in some of the wide range of movements and activities (using bodyweight and readily available equipment) utilised by the presenter in a variety of settings to keep the sessions fun and varied. Moreover, strategies used to successfully enhance the students' enjoyment and boost student engagement will be discussed and demonstrated along with modifications to cater for primary-aged students.

The presenter is a P-12 HPE teacher with over twenty years of experience, as well as a Level 2 S&C Coach. He currently lectures at a regional university campus, teaches at a large regional high school and conducts S&C sessions with students from all physical activity backgrounds and abilities in his HPE classes as well as with elite junior athletes.
